CARRY OUT THE REGULAR AT SEA ROUTINE WITH THE FOLLOWING EXCEPTIONS:

0745 - Muster on Station

1300 - Ropeyarn Sunday

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  1. The following was released to Hawaiian Media at 200915Z. "The 2400ton US Navy destroyer USS FRANK KNOX (DD742) while operating in the South China Sea ran aground on a coral reef seven and one half miles south west of Pratas Island Saturday, July 18, at 0300 local time. Prates Island is located 165 miles southeast of Hong Kong and approximately 240 miles south west of Taiwan. The auxiliary ships MUNSEE, COPA, GRAPPLE and MANOPAC steamed to the aid of FRANK KNOX and are conducting salvage operations. The exact extent of damage to the KNOX has not been determined. There are no personnel injuries to date
  2. The crew is commended for your outstanding performance during the past few days. Thursday night for the fourth night in succession we fired shore bombardment at Viet Cong troops in support of the 3rd Marine division. A total of 281 rounds have been fired since being assigned to DaNang defense on 16 July 1965. The following is a summary of targets and results:
19 July Target 1: 12 rounds illumination of an enemy position
Target 2: 100 rounds explosive on an area target for harassment and interdiction.
20 July Target 1 and 2: 28 rounds illumination of suspected enemy movements.
24 July Target 1: 25 rounds on suspected enemy movement for harassment.
Target 2: 23 rounds on enemy movement
Target 3: 13 rounds on enemy movement
Target 4  9 rounds on enemy movement
Target 5: 12 rounds on enemy movement
Target 6 12 rounds on enemy movement
Target 7: 10 rounds on enemy movement
Target 8: 13 rounds on enemy movement
22 July 20 rounds on a suspected enemy area by mass firing with CRAIG
  1. The Marine spotters reported that all firings were effective
